The Cemetery Road Bowls Club Section of the Appleby Frodingham Works Athletic Club is situated within the sports grounds of Redbourn Club on Cemetery Road, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire DN16 1NU and is reached by driving between the Redbourn Social Club and the Par 3 Golf Club, through the car park, carrying on through the double metal gates, down the track which runs through the Par 3 Golf Course until reaching a car park area outside the Bowls Club.
The Club was founded in 1985 with just a few members, some of whom still bowl and take an active interest in the Bowls Club, and currently the Club has a membership of 59 Adult members and 2 Junior members, with ages ranging from 15 years old to 92 years young which, considering most Bowls Clubs in the Scunthorpe & District Bowls League are struggling for members is quite an achievement and is now run by a Management Committee comprising a Chairperson; Vice Chairperson; Secretary; Treasurer; Club Captain; Club Vice Captain; Club Ladies Captain and Four Committee Members..
Our members are of different bowling levels ranging from complete novice to very experienced and County Standard Bowlers. The members range from just wanting to have a friendly roll up with their Bowling Friends on a fine Summers afternoon to Bowlers playing in the Scunthorpe & District Bowls League were we have teams entered in the Division 1; Division 2; Division 4 and Ladies Division together with the Men’s Triples League and the Humberside Triples League. The club also runs Internal Club Knockout Competitions for our members which attract considerable entries and are usually enjoyed by all from the Novice Bowlers to the more experienced Bowlers, finishing with a finals week end at the end of August or Early September which usually ends with a meal and Presentation of Trophies at the Redbourn Social Club. Some of our members want to Bowl at a higher level and are encouraged to enter Scunthorpe & District Knock Out Competitions together with the Club being Affiliated to the EBA and EBF which allows the members to enter Bowls Lincolnshire EBA County Competitions and Lincolnshire Bowling Association EBF County Competitions.
Both Ladies and Men and Bowls England National Competitions and be considered to play in the County Bowls Matches and during the last few years a number of our members have played and been successful in a number of County Competitions with the Lady Members winning the Lincolnshire Women’s Bowling Association Nelson Trophy in 2012 for the first time.
Most of our Experienced Bowlers are always ready to help the newer bowls learn the art of Flat Green Bowling and the new members are encouraged to bowl in the League Matches and Competitions.
During July and August the club runs a number of COME and TRY mornings on a SATURDAY for anyone interested in trying their hand at the sport of Flat Green Bowling and all that is needed is flat soled shoes woods are available and anyone interested should telephone or e-mail the Club Secretary.
The Cemetery Road Bowls Club hold Four social functions during the Bowling Season from the end of April to early September with the last being the Finals Day when the club also hosts the Final of the Corus Cup Competition, which is a Mixed Pairs Knock Out Competition open to members of other Clubs within the Scunthorpe and District Bowls League Area, and several of these result in the Members retiring to the Redbourn Social Club to enjoy a meal and possibly a Shandy or two before returning to their bowling.
